How to know when to pivot - Episode 22

Life is full of twists and turns, and sometimes we reach a point where continuing on the same path doesn’t feel right anymore.

But how do you know when it’s time to pivot? Let’s talk about some signs that may tip you off.

Create & Consume

  • What I’m creating this week: I painted a bowl with peaches on it at Color Me Mine this weekend (here was my inspiration)

  • What I’m consuming this week: postseason baseball! The Mets and Yankees have both made it to the playoffs and we’re having a blast watching the games unfold

In this episode:

1. Good on paper

On the surface, everything may seem perfect. You’re hitting your goals, checking off to-do lists, and from an outsider’s perspective, things are going great. But if deep down something feels off or unfulfilling, it’s worth paying attention to that inner voice.

Often, we ignore our gut instincts because it’s easier to stick with what’s familiar, but trusting your intuition can be the first step toward realizing a pivot is necessary.

2. Aha! moments

Sometimes the need for a change comes when something new catches your interest. Maybe you’ve discovered a new passion, hobby, or career opportunity that lights you up in a way your current situation no longer does.

If you feel more motivated or excited about something new, it could be a sign that it’s time to explore a different direction.

3. Expecting different results

We’ve all been there—putting in the effort, hoping things will improve, but no matter how hard we try, nothing changes.

There’s a quote, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results" is a reminder that if we continue doing the same thing and expecting different outcomes, we’re setting ourselves up for frustration.

CORRECTION from the show: I mentioned in the show this was an Einstein quote but there's no substantive evidence that he actually said it. The earliest known use of this phrase is from a 1983 book by Rita Mae Brown.

4. Financial flexibility

Let’s be real—a pivot may require money. Whether it’s supporting a career change, launching a new passion project, or even taking a break, it’s important to ensure that you can support yourself during the transition.

Consider whether you have enough savings, passive income streams, or a financial cushion that allows you to shift focus without adding unnecessary stress.

5. Watch your peers

If others are pivoting successfully, it might be a sign that the time is right for you too. Maybe you’ve noticed colleagues exploring new roles, friends starting new hobbies, or fellow parents finding alternative solutions for childcare.

These external cues can confirm that your thoughts of making a change are not just isolated but part of a larger pattern or trend.

6. Willingness to create systems

Making a pivot isn’t just about deciding to change; it’s about creating a plan that will help you succeed in the new direction. Are you ready to put systems in place to ensure your transition goes smoothly?

This might mean setting aside time to focus on new goals, organizing your schedule differently, or developing new habits that support your pivot. A plan can make all the difference between a successful shift and a chaotic one.

7. Quick actions and momentum

One of the biggest indicators that you’re ready to pivot is your willingness to take action—and not just once, but consistently. For me and my pivot on YouTube, this included posting a video acknowledging the change, buying a new camera, and reducing my video editor’s hours.

But beyond that, the real success comes from continuing to show up for yourself and your new direction. It’s easy to start, but sticking with it is where the magic happens.

Summary

Deciding to pivot can feel overwhelming, but it’s often necessary for growth, happiness, or simply a change of pace.

Whether it’s a gut feeling, a spark of inspiration, or external signs, knowing when to pivot is about listening to yourself and being ready to take the steps necessary for a successful transition.

If you’ve been feeling the pull to make a change, trust that now might be the perfect time to start exploring what’s next.
