My favorite makeup application tips and hacks - Episode 12

New to the world of makeup or just looking to learn some tips? Today I’m sharing the best makeup application tips and hacks I’ve learned throughout the years as a beauty content creator and former magazine editor.

From what type of brush to use to the order you apply products in, these tips will help makeup look amazing and last longer.

Create & consume

What Austen is creating this week: I have a new blog post up that’s a step-by-step tutorial of how I curl my hair with a barrel curling iron. I have been wanting to do a blog post like this for a while and I’ve finally gotten around to it.

What Austen is consuming this week: Amanda Pulitano’s moving vlogs, I met her at an amika event and she was so sweet, she also lives in Hoboken and just moved into a new place and I’ve just been immediately clicking whenever she has a new vlog up, I love her vibe and her vlogs are so fun

In this episode:

Dermaplaning for a smooth base

Using a tool like the Versed tool, hold your skin taut and gently remove peach fuzz and dead skin cells. This step ensures your makeup has a smooth base to adhere to.

Skin prep sets the tone

Proper skin prep is crucial and the product you choose will set the tone for the rest of your makeup. Use a more mattifying or silicone-based primer for a glam finish and a glowy primer for a more glowy finish.

Brush vs sponge: which to use?

  • Makeup brush: Great for a more matte, glam finish

  • Beauty ponge: Perfect for a dewy look (make sure it's damp for the best results!)

Tips for using stick products

  • Placement: Apply higher up on your cheeks for a lifted appearance.

  • Application: Use a brush or your fingers to warm and blend the product into your skin.

  • Blending: Blend thoroughly to avoid harsh lines, or dot the product for a more seamless look.

Layering products: cream first, powder second

When layering products, always apply cream products first and follow with powder to set everything in place.

The life-changing impact of eye primer

Apply eye primer on your eyelids and under your eyes before concealer like this one from Milk Makeup that works for both. This step helps your eyeshadow stay put all day and avoid creasing.

Eyeshadow brushes matter

Skip the brushes that come with eyeshadow kits. Instead, use a small fluffy brush like the Sigma E40 brush for better blending. Use a windshield wiper motion and circular blending for a seamless finish.

Preventing flakes

  • Mascara: Wipe the wand before application to avoid clumps and flakes.

  • Clear brow gel: Use sparingly for a natural look.

Powder application for targeted oil control

Use a smaller brush to apply powder in targeted areas. This helps control oil without making your skin look cakey.

Setting spray for long-lasting makeup

Use setting spray as you go to lock in each layer of makeup for big events like a wedding where you want your makeup to last all day.

Less is more

Start with a little product and build up as needed. It's easier to add more than to remove excess.

Summary

By following these tips, you'll have smoother makeup application with a look that can last all day.
