Rules I follow as a self-employed creator - Episode 11

Being a self-employed content creator comes with its own set of unique challenges and rewards. Over the years, I’ve developed some general rules to keep myself on track and ensure I’m making the most of my creative career.

Start the Day Off Right

The way you start your day sets the tone for everything that follows. For me, it’s crucial to create before I consume where I focus on myself instead of worrying about other people. I discussed my morning routine in-depth in episode 8.

Trusting Myself

I’ve learned to trust my gut over the years especially when it comes to brand deals and deciding what content to post. My intuition helps me make decisions that align with my values and long-term goals.

Minding My Own Business

It’s easy to get caught up in what others are doing, but I’ve found that focusing on what makes sense for me is key to my success. Not letting other people influence my key business decisions allows me to stay true to my vision and create content that my audience loves.

The DIY Route

I believe in learning to do everything myself at first. This approach has helped me develop a wide range of skills, from photography to creating digital products to bookkeeping and mastering SEO. While I’m not super passionate about all of these things, I know I can do them if I ever truly need to.

When To Outsource

Before spending money, I feel it’s important to make a little money consistently so you can re-invest that money. This ensures you feel comfortable and confident in your financial decisions. If you can’t hire someone on a continuous basis, consider hiring where needed, such as a virtual assistant for a course launch.

Be a Good Boss and a Good Employee

As a self-employed creator, I strive to be reasonable with my work schedule, balancing the demands of being both a boss and an employee. This means setting realistic goals and taking care of my well-being to avoid burnout.

Hard Work Wins

Success as a content creator often comes down to playing the long game. Consistency and hard work are crucial, so I always want to show up for my audience.

Stand By Pricing Minimums

Knowing your worth is essential. Set your pricing minimums and stand by them, even when it’s hard to turn down money. I’ve learned what to charge by doing research, asking around, and understanding pricing in this industry.

Double Down on What’s Working

Find areas that you enjoy and that make you money, and keep finding ways to increase that. Double down on what’s working to make things easier for yourself and to maximize your success.

Learn New Tools

AI will never fully replicate what I can do as a creator. I use AI to speed up my creation process, not to replace it. There are many creative ways to use AI tools to make life easier like transcription softwares and video editors.

Cheer Others On

If I ever feel envious of another creator, I try to turn it into motivation. In a female-dominated industry we must try to keep it as positive as possible and uplift others. Cheer others on and remember that what’s meant for you won’t pass you by.

Rules Can Change

Flexibility is key in the ever-evolving world of content creation. Sometimes you need to pivot and make changes, and that’s okay. Adapt your rules as you grow and learn what works best for you.

Summary

Navigating the world of self-employment as a content creator can be challenging, but having a set of personal rules can make the journey smoother. These guidelines have helped me stay focused, motivated, and true to my vision. Remember, the rules can change, and that’s perfectly okay. Keep evolving, keep creating, and most importantly, keep believing in yourself.
